After 11 years away from Portland, I recently returned to spend more time with family and the Northwest lifestyle I enjoy so much!
I went to college up in Tacoma, Washington, at the University of Puget Sound, before heading to New York City and landing at a digital marketing agency. I got the chance to learn the ins and outs of the digital marketing world from the ground up. This included: strategies to increase revenue online; integrated marketing campaigns; web analytics; web design and production; email marketing; search engine marketing (text-based ads and banners); search engine optimization; and social media marketing.
The agency also specialized in working with nonprofit organizations, which offered a unique perspective on how to apply the latest in digital marketing and branding strategies to less commercial (but very competitive) nonprofits. It turns out that nonprofits need money just like businesses to survive! As a result, my work with the nonprofit sector blends nicely to working with small and medium-sized businesses.
A passion for the arts (most recently as a singer with the New York Choral Society) also opened doors for me in NYC. As part of Yellowhawk Creative, I had the chance to work with a handful of cultural organizations on website strategies and brand positioning. Partnering with one other person in the Yellowhawk effort also showed how effective one-on-one attention from an agency principle can be when working with clients.
Finally, interest in the arts turned into a passion for photography. Beyond the technical aspects of taking pictures, though, is how effective photography can be in impacting people’s perceptions. It’s such a shame there are so many businesses and organizations out there doing great things, but what they have to “show” for it isn’t a true reflection of what they want.
